JIANGXI ACADEMY OF ART
Year : 2022-2023
Location : Nanchang, Jiangxi, China
Client : Jiangxi Academy of Art
Jiangxi Academy of Art is located on Bai Hua Peninsula in Nanchang, Jiangxi. Bai Hua Peninsula is the core of the very first commercial district of Nanchang, surrounded by Bayi Park, and the central commercial street of the old downtown - Zhongshan Road. The building where the academy is located is one of the three major buildings in Nanchang during the era of the Republic of China. It was once the command post of Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek's in Nanchang from 1928 to 1933. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the building was used as the Jiangxi Provincial Library and was transformed into the Jiangxi Academy of Art in 2020.
Jiangxi Academy of Art, directly under the federal government, is currently undergoing an important functional transformation, transitioning from a research-oriented institution to a comprehensive institution that also provides public services to the city. We believe this is a great opportunity to create a new focal point public space through landscape design, connecting Bayi Park with Zhongshan Commercial Street, revitalizing the old district of Nanchang, and providing possibilities for future urban renewal in the area.
We envision the landscape of the academy to be like a traditional Chinese scroll painting, where seasonal activities can unfold gradually on this ongoing opening scroll. In the center, we designed a multi-functional activity lawn that caters to various events. On both sides, there will be relatively fixed public spaces, including a terraced theater area and a lakeside recreation area. The terraced theater area not only creates a new perspective for viewing activities and the lake, but also effectively shields the service area behind. As for the lakeside resting area, we have designed a handrail bar for all the lakeside areas, where residents can buy a cup of coffee or milk tea, lean on the bar, enjoy the lake, and relax.
Finally, we have discovered a way for art to contribute to urban development. We propose that the academy hosts an outdoor installation art festival once a year, inviting artists, designers, and architects to create a public artwork on the front lawn for people to visit. After the event, this artwork can be placed in other public spaces in the city that are awaiting renovation, creating hotspots for the local community and initiating local urban renewal and development.
